Score:Inter 0 Lazio 0FT
San Siro, Milan
After recent under performing matches Inter would look to get things back on track as they welcome visitors Lazio. The last time these two squads squared off Inter would win 3-1. Also over their past six matches with Lazio they have three wins each. This week third place Inter would try and get back into winning form as they’ve been under performing the past few weeks. While fifth place Lazio would look to move up in the league standings as they sit two points behind their derby rivals Roma. Things Inter will need to look out for when playing Lazio is keeping their scoring chances limited as they like to take chances often. They also use individual skill to create scoring opportunities as well and need to focus on person to person coverage to keep those chances limited as well. But if Inter are in a winning spot they need to focus on keeping it as Lazio are a team that is good from coming from behind scenarios. If they keep an eye out on those things the best Inter can hope for is a draw. The first half would start off slow with until the quarter way point when Lazio would kick things off but none of these fierce competitors would capitalize on the opportunities they had. The first end would end with both teams at 0-0 a piece. In the second half each team would create multiple opportunities but still failed to capitalize on them. However there was a controversial call in the second half as the ball would hit Skriniar’s arm after Immobile’s kick and should’ve given Lazio a penalty kick but the call for the penalty would be denied by the referee and kept things even. If the call was given Lazio could’ve easily gone up 1-0 but due to bad officiating Inter would scrape by with a 0-0 draw against Lazio.
This week Inter would stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation but would see some player and position changes. In goal second in clean sheet Handanovic. On defense would be left back Santon who would get his third start of the season after first starting on December 10th. Changing to left center back loan signer Milan Skriner who has started majority of the matches this campaign. Next to him getting his first start of the season right center back Ranocchia. Capping them off would be right back Cancelo. On defensive mid would be Gagliardini who normally plays on the right hand side would move to the left side in this match. Next to him would be Vecino. On the attacking mid field would be right winger and secondary goal scorer Perisic who has stepped up in creating goal chances and showing great leadership qualities off and on the pitch. In the center moving from defensive mid replacing Brozovic Valero who has a career 18 appearances for Inter. And on left wing none other than Candreva who has played every match this season. Up top the scoring beast striker Icardi who has a total of 17 goals this season. This looks like a solid lineup but they need to keep an eye on Immobile who is Lazio Main scorer who is known for creating multiple opportunities in a match and who is good at breaking away with the ball and who’ll do anything to get his team the victory.
After the players would take their places on this Saturday night match up this highly anticipated matchup would get underway. Early on in this half would come out with a slow start with both teams playing keep away. But after the fifteen minute mark is when things would heat up as Leiva of Lazio takes a right footed shot from outside the box is blocked. Shortly after that attempt Adam takes a right footed shot of his own from the right of the box is blocked as well. This match so far as been all Lazio. A minute later Immobile takes a right footed shot from the left of the box misses high and to the right after a corner kick. At the twenty minute mark Lazio would yet again try and put themselves on the board as Sergej takes a right footed shot from outside the box is saved by Handanovic in the bottom right corner of the goal. This would come with an assist from Immobile. Inter at this point look disoriented and sloppy and they need to get their acts together if they have any hopes of getting a draw. With seventeen minutes in this half Lazio would take another attempt proving to be the dominate side so far in this match when Levia takes a right footed shot from outside the box goes over the crossbar. At minute thirty Inter would finally get their first chance of the match as Perisic takes a right footed shot from the center of the box is saved in th etop center of the goal after a cross from Valero. Minutes later as Inter would pick up some momentum Vecino takes a left footed shot from outside the box misses slightly to the right. A minute before the half would end Vecino takes a right footed shot from outside the box is blocked. Seconds later with a rebound Candreva takes a right footed shot of his own from outside the box misses to the left. If Inter can create more chances and use actual teamwork and actually care about the match being played they can pull away with a point.
After the break this match would resume. Just like the first half things would start of slow and things would slowly heat up as Inter would look to get back on track while Lazio would look to give Inter their third loss of the season. After the fifity five minute mark Inter would try and get some momentum going and try and put themselves on the board when Valero would take a right footed shot from outside the box is saved in the lower left corner of the goal. Shortly after Icardi would take a right footed shot from the right of the box misses high to the right of the goal. In the sixty first minute some controversy would occur as Immobile would take a shot and the ball would hit Milan Skriniar’s arm and should’ve given Lazio a easy penalty. The play would stop momentarialy as the referee would check the new VAR which was placed in Serie A at the start of the season. After the review the referee would overturn the penalty has both teams would play on. This penalty should’ve been clearly given since it was a hand ball and was bad officiating by the referee. Shortly after the whole incident Lazio would look to hopefully put themselves on the board as Inter still struggle to amount an offense. Felipe would take a right footed shot from the left of the box misses to the right. In the seventy first minute Inter would make their first subbing of th ematch as Mario replaces Candreva. Minutes later Feilpe would yet again try and put his boys on the board with a right footed shot from the right of the box is saved in the bottom left corner after a headed pass from teamamate Adam. Marco takes a left footed shot from the left of the box is saved in the left corner shortly after. Near the eighty minute mark Filipe takes a right footed shot from outside the box is close but misses to the left assisted by Immobile after a fast break. After the eighty minute mark Inter would replace Cancelo with Dalbert. In the eighty third minute Perisic would take a header to try and break the deadlock from outside the box is blocked. Nani of Lazio a minute later would take a left footed shot from outside the box is saved in the lower left corner. With a minute left to play Icardi would take a header from the center of the box misses to the left. In the final minute Inter would have one last chance to come away with the win as Ranocchia takes a header from the center of the box is to high after a cross from Brozovic. This match would end with both teams sharing a point as the score would be 0-0.
This result was the best Inter could hope for based on their dismal performance. The match could’ve easily went to Lazio who should’ve clearly been given that penalty and they outplayed Inter majority of the match. Clearly this proves Inter have a ton of work to do as title hopes are slipping from their grasp. They need to work on creating more scoring chances against other big clubs and keeping the pressure on their offense and keeping their chances limited. Especially when teams create chances using individual skill. Also come the transfer window there are definitely players that will need to go. Icardi would be a crushing loss but recently he’s been playing like he no longer wants to be at Inter and who is holding out on a contract extension to hear the potential offer of Real Madrid. Inter need to get rid of the dead weight and get players who will be happy to be at the club and who will help the club going forward. The man of the match is Handanovic who made sure none of Lazio’s chances went in the goal. Also he was the player really showing any sort of effort. Next week Inter travel to Artemio Franchi to take on eighth place Fiorentina. The last time they squared off Inter would go on to win 3-0. Based on their recent performance the best Inter can hope for is a draw or a 1-0 victory. Hopefully they can get their acts together or any title hopes may become history. As always FORZA INTER.
