As the transfer window starts winding down and clubs everywhere are making final moves and getting their teams ready for the upcoming season. Inter continue to add to their squad. Inter have already made some great signings such as young winger Martinez from Racing, Radja from Roma but the downside of that deal was Inter lost their best youth prospect Nicolo Zanilo which could bite them in the butt later on as he shows great potential also signing defender Steffan Devrij from Lazio at the start of the transfer window. So the Suning Group have been hard at work trying to find that last signing of the window as after this one their doesn’t seem to be any major transfers after this. As this year was the World Cup which is a great way to scout players and see what they’re capable of and The Sunning Group did just that. With Croatia’s strong push in the World Cup making the final Inter saw potential prospects such as Real Madrid player Modric who as been a awesome midfielder but due to his hefty price tag of 750mill Euros that put him out of inter’s reach due to their constant money problems. They were however trying to get Vrsaljiko from Athletico Madrid and Arturo Vidal from Bayern. Inter would only get one of them as Barcelona got Vidal on a 18 million fee as he joined the Catalans . That left Athletico Madrid right back Vrsaljiko as the defender set to make his return to Serie A. This deal as been weeks in the making as there have been back and forth discussions over price and terms for the right back. As of the recent week terms and conditions were agreed upon for Vrsaljiko since Inter don’t have the full funds to buy him they agreed on a 6.5mill euro one year loan deal with the option to buy at the end of the season for close to 17 million euros. After completing his medical earlier this week it became official and Inter agreed with terms for the left-back.
Vrsaljiko signed to Dinamo Zagreb from Lokomotiva where he would develop more as a player in December 2009 before the winter break. He would debut for the club in February against Croatia Sesvete where during the season where he had 27 apps and that year they would finish first and win the league title. The following year Vrsaljiko would miss a few matches of the 2010-11 season as he was called to the Croatia national team he would get his first start after returning from international duty on the 31st of July where they lost 2-1. Also that year he debuted in his first European competition as they would lose in the third qualifying match to Sheriff Tiraspol. In August of the same year their were rumors of him leaving for Marseille but the vice president shut down those rumors saying he was not for sale. With his help Dinamo would secure a second league title. Sime started the 2011-12 season helping with a assist to teammate Ivan in the Champions League qualifier but in August he would be sent off and given a three match ban in a playoff against Malmo FF. In league play he had 22apps and 5 assist as they would get another double title the league and Hrvatski Cup. In the 2013 season he had 25 apps and 3 assist and won their fourth league title in a row. In 2013 Vrsaljiko signed for Italian side Genoa for 4.6mill euros where he made 22apps but missed half of the season due to injury and Genoa that year finished 14th. A year later in 2014 Sime signed for Sassuolo for 3.5mill euros where under now Roma manager Eusebio Di Francesco helped his team make their first Europa League qualification after finishing 6th that season finishing above both Milan clubs. Between his two seasons at Sassuolo he had 57apps. In May 2018 Sime signed a five year deal with Spain side Athetico Madrid and would start in the Europa final as they won the title that season. He has 35 total apperences with the club and Athletco in both those season they finished 3rd in 2016-17 season then this current past season they finished 2nd behind Barcelona. On July 31st after weeks of rumors and speculation Vrsaljiko signed a one year loan deal with Inter Milan for 6.5mill euros with a option to buy at the end of the season for17mill euros.
What can Inter do with Vrsaljiko he is commonly used as a defensive right back and would make a great addition to the defensive area. But he is versatile and would be good in any of the defensive areas depending on where they need him based on the opposition that day. In my opinion he maybe a swap starter to provide fresh legs in alternating matches so that whoever plays in the right back position routinely can get some rest and catch a break. Or he might be used as a substitution player in crucial moments where fresh legs are needed. This is a good thing to contribute and help boost Inter’s squad depth issue and possibly help Inter make a push in the Champions League but without full cooperation from his new teammates that’ll be a stretch as sometimes there’s lack of team work between players and the coaches. But he’s hard working and does what is needed to get the job done which helped his Croatia side to the World Cup finals despite losing to France. Hopefully his determination and drive leaches out to the other players and wanting to accomplish something this season. I look forward to seeing what he can do for Inter this season with that being said welcome to Inter Sime Vrsaljiko.
