After what felt like a long summer break and transfer window Serie A action finally returns. This week Inter takes on Sassuolo. Last season Inter qualified for the Champions League where they haven’t been in for over two seasons. For Inter that was huge accomplishment after a roller coaster the season before where they even failed to qualify for Europe. Sassuolo however finished 11th behind Sampdoria. Sassuolo look to move up in the standings this season while Inter are looking to hopefully compete for the scudetto. it seems unlikely but thats what they hope to achieve. Last season Sassuolo beat Inter in both their meetings last season sweeping the season series. Inter have lost five out of their last six matches against Sassuolo and have yet to beat them at their place. Inter haven’t beaten them since the 2016-17 season where Inter won 1-0 . Some things that will help Inter a little bit this time is Sassuolo lost their main goal scorer in Matteo Politano to Inter who will be facing his former club. However Sassuolo aren’t to be taken lightly because if they catch you sleeping they will take advantage of you. Inter need to keep an eye on still is that Sassuolo are great at scoring chances and setting up for their fellow teammates. They are good at using individual skill to also create chances. They are also good at defending the ball and keeping the ball in the oppositions half. Also their defense is good at stealing the ball as well. Inter need to work on finishing scoring chances which was one of their main issues last season along with being caught offside. Also they need to brush off any mistakes that may come because they can’t afford to let mistakes get to them this early in the season because when Inter make mistakes they are prone to making more and which can cause them to lose a streak of matches and lose valuable points. Though it’s early every point counts and can help set the tempo for the season. Some teams will use the offside trap and they need to be careful with that. Overall on paper Inter look to be the stronger side but if history shows anyone anything those that don’t learn their history are doomed to repeat the best Inter can hope for is a draw in this match because more than likely Sassuolo will win this season opening match. In the first half both sides would open up multiple chances but Sassuolo looked to be the stronger side as they opened their season with the first goal of their season and the match late in the first half. This put Sassuolo up 1-0 at the half. In the second half Sassuolo continued their pressure on Inter taking chances and holding Inter to a stand still as they would win the match 1-0 giving Inter a bad start to the season.
In the first match of the season Inter go with a different formation than the usual 4-2-3-1 they are opting for a 4-4-1-1 formation which is unusual for Inter but hopefully these changes make a difference. In goal is none other than Handanovic In the defensive area on left back is Dalbert he usually doesn’t play much but when he does start he does a excellent job of defending the ball and keeping the ball in the oppositions half. In the left center mid is Miranda who has helped the defense every time he starts. Making his Inter debut on right center mid is De Vrij who was a key part of his former club Lazio and who in my opinion will help Inter’s squad depth issue. On right back is top defender of the club D’Ambrosio. Up top on defensive left wingback making his debut after signing from Juventus Asomah, next to him on left center back is World Cup runner up Brozovic who had helped create scoring chances and assist for the club last season. On right center wingback is Vecino and on right defensive wingback also making his debut is former Sassuolo player is Politano who had 96apps and 20 goals but now we’ll see if he can help Inter accomplish something this year. Up top is Inter’s newest young striker the bull from Argentina Lautaro Martinez who showed potential during the preseason friendlies scoring over six goals. Above him the top goal scorer and shared golden boot winner Icardi who scored 29 goals last season. This is a terrible lineup they should’ve stuck with the 4-2-3-1 formation in the back Asomah, Skriniar, Devrij and D’Ambrosio. Then Vecino and Gagliardini. In the three Perisic, Martinez and Politano. then up top Icardi. There are several threats on Sassuolo first is Ferrari who is good at stealing the ball from their opponents and Duncan, Berardi and DiFrancesco who are great goal chance takers and who will do anything to help their side win the match. The best Inter can hope for is a draw but to be honest they’ll struggle against them as they’re facing them at home where they have failed to win. But anything can happen.
After all the hype and anticipation this match gets underway. Early in the first half Sassuolo would get things started early as Mehdi takes a right footed shot from the left of the box after a assist from Boateng is saved in the bottom left corner. After the ten minute mark is where things heat up as Mehdi yet again steps up to try and get that opening goal with a left footed shot from the center of the box after a cross from Rogerio is blocked. Seconds later Poi takes a right footed shot from outside the box is also blocked and shortly after Alfred Duncan takes a left footed shot from the center of the box after a cross from Poi misses to the right. Near the 15 minute mark Inter get their first chance of the half as Icardi takes a right footed shot from outside the box is saved in the center of the goal. Sassuolo so far are dominating Inter both offensive and defensive. They are cutting through Inter’s offense like butter and they’re doing a great job holding Inter to a stand still and not letting them get room to create chances. Twenty minutes in Duncan takes a left footed shot from outside the box is blocked. A minute later Icardi gets Inter’s second chance of the match with a right footed shot from a hard position off the right of the box is saved in the lower right corner. Seconds later Icardi again looks to help get things going for Inter with a header after a cross from Politano from the right of the box is blocked. Minutes later DiFrancesco draws a foul from Miranda and is given a penalty which is converted from Berardi with a left footed shot to the high center of the goal giving Sassuolo the 1-0 lead. Three minutes later Icardi would look to bring things back on even terms with a right footed shot from outside is close but misses to the right. At this point of the match Inter were struggling to get things going. After the forty minute mark Devrij takes a right footed shot from outside the box is blocked. Seconds later Berardi look to add to his sides lead with a right footed shot from the right of the box with a assist from Duncan after a fast break is to high. With that the first half ends with Sassuolo leading 1-0. Inter needed to work on for the next half is maintaining possession of the ball and creating scoring chances while defensive they need to stop Sassuolo from getting breathing room and getting chances of their own if they don’t it’ll be another loss against Sassuolo at home and the curse of being able to beat them on their home turf will continue.
In the second half Inter look to bring things back on even terms while Sassuolo look to add to their 1-0 lead. Before the half would get started Inter make their first substitution of the match as Perisic would replace Dalbert. One minute into the second half the fresh Perisic tries to bring things on even terms with a right footed shot from the center of the box goes to the left over the crossbar. Minutes later Politano gets his first chance in Inter colors against his former club with a left footed shot from outside the box is blocked. Shortly after the fifty five minute mark Brozovic takes a right footed shot from outside the box goes to high. Sassuolo are continuing their dominance over Inter despite them creating more chances and dominating the possession. Two minutes later DiFrancesco takes a right footed shot from outside the box is blocked. With thirty minutes left to play Politano takes a left footed shot from outside the box misses to the left. Minutes later DiFrancesco takes a right footed shot after a corner from the right in a difficult spot is high and to the right. After sixty five minutes Icardi takes a right footed shot from the center of the box is to high after a cross from Perisic. Before the seventy minute mark Inter make their second subbing of the match as Keita replaces Martinez. Sassuolo at this point have this match in the bag but they still have nineteen minutes left of play with that Politano takes a right footed shot after a cross from Perisic on the right side of the box misses to the right. In the eighty third minute Keita looks to get his first goal with the club with a right footed shot from the left of the box is blocked. A minute later Politano takes a left footed shot from outside the box misses to the right. Duncan of Sassuolo shortly after takes a left footed shot from the right of the box misses to the right. With four minutes left in this Sassuolo dominating match Inter make their final substitution as Karamoh replaces Brozovic. In the final minute of the match Devrij would hope to give Inter at least a draw with a header from the center of the box after a cross from Perisic misses to the right. With that the final whistle blows as Sassuolo win the match 1-0 giving Inter a bad way to open their season.
This was definitely not the way Inter fans wanted to start the season. This match was a disaster from the tactical errors and miscommunication all the way to the way the players played. The players passing was inconsistent or non existent at all. They had a hard time finishing scoring chances and finding room to create them at times. But to be honest I knew Inter would lose this match based on recent history. For the next match Inter will need to work on their passing and finishing scoring chances. Also they need to figure out and work on their tactics and communication. Hopefully they work on those things this week during practice and get things moving in the right direction. But it’s still early on and there’s still time to improve so fans no need to be alarmed. Also they can’t let this loss get to them they just need to work on a few things and focus on the next match. The man of the match goes to Asomah he did a great job trying to defend the ball and at least tried to get the ball away from the opposition and created and helped with scoring chances if possible he shows promise for the club and will be a valuable and versatile asset as well. Next week Inter take on a Torino team that push Roma to the brink in the early game befre Dzeko spoiled the part they will be looking to improve on a good performance. In their last six matches against Torino they each have two wins a piece and two draws. This match can go either way. This is going to be a long season and can’t wait to bring you all the action and let’s get this party started. As always until next week FORZA INTER.
