Inter salvage point in epic second half showdown. #239

Inter Milan 2 Monchengladbach 2

San Siro

Milan Italy

Welcome everyone to another installment of the Champions League. A few weeks ago the draw took place and Inter ended up in group B with Monchengladbach, Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk. It has been a few decades since Inter have taken on Monchengladbach so it is unsure of their previous history facing each other. But since there’s no recent history we can only focus on the teams as we see them today. Inter in their recent match struggled against their derby rivals Milan while Monchengladbach are coming into this match on a draw in their Bundesliga match. So going into the match Monchengladbach have the momentum. Though Inter are playing at home where they are strong but they have been struggling. Despite getting a few solid players the thing that will kill them is the gaps they allow to stay open to give their opponents a chance to score. However Monchengladbach are more cohesive and more composed under pressure which will be to their advantage. The player that Monchengladbach will need to isolate as he’ll be the difference maker is Lukaku. He is quick and agile and very physical. He is also good for headers and winning aerial duels which makes him an all around solid player. On the flip side Inter will need to keep an eye on Lazaro who is on loan to them from Inter. He has the insight on how the club works and will use that to help Monchengladbach get the win over them. With this being said I think Inter will win but it will be close.

In the first half things were evenly matched with both sides but the first half ended in a 0-0 draw. But things in the second half is where the momentum really picked up for both sides. Inter would draw first blood as Martinez would make a cross from the left of the box the ball was heading out of bounds but D’Ambrosio kept the ball in play. Darmian would find the opportunity but his shot was deflected but Lukaku saw the ball and with quick thinking hit the ball with the left foot landing the ball in the met giving Inter the 1-0 lead. In the sixty third minute Vidal fouls Thuram giving Monchengladbach a penalty kick which is converted by Bensenebani. This made things even once more. With six minutes after a pass from Plea Hofmann lands a shot from the right side of the box landing the ball in the center of the goal giving Monchengladbach their first lead of the match. In the 90th minute Bastoni takes a corner which connects with Lukaku inside the box landing the ball in the top left corner making things 2-2. Inter had one final chance to win it as Martinez gets a foul and gives Inter a free kick but Kolorov ends up finding the side netting of the left hand side. This match ends as a 2-2 draw.

This match was an undeserved result as Lukaku in the second goal was offside. But at the end of the day a win is a win. In the first half as mentioned was a fairly even affair. But in the second half things definitely picked up as both sides kept up with each other. However the only issue that will kill Inter in the Champions League and in some of their league matches and that is the counter attacks. If a team is strong in that area it’ll be hard for them defensively to chase them down as they’re not as quick. Inter in this match looked a little better in not leaving as many gaps open but that is one thing that needs to become more consistent. The man of the match goes to Lukaku who was the only player to find the back of the net in this match and could’ve had many others he was fast on his feet and got the job done. The next Inter match is in league as they take on Genoa. As always until the next one Forza Inter.
